A San Angelo liquor store clerk was charged Thursday with embezzling more than $100,000 from his employer since the first of the year, according to a probable cause complaint filed by Sgt. Johnny Walker of the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office.
Jared Wayne Ducote, 28, was released Friday morning on $25,000 bond, according to jail records.
According to the complaint, Ducote, who worked at Willeke Wine and Spirits, 6510 U.S. Highway 67 S., was arrested after Walker spoke to several people who said they witnessed the store clerk pocket a payment of $800.
Other witnesses, the complaint alleged, saw "several cases of high-dollar liquor" in Ducote's master bedroom closet.
The store owner, Mat Hudson, noticed "a large discrepancy" in the cash and liquor flow of his business and began asking a distributor and at least one customer questions, according to the complaint.
Ducote was the only employee at the time.
According to the complaint, when Hudson told Ducote about the discrepancy with the inventory, Ducote told Hudson he was "quitting and joining the military."
Theft of property between $100,000 and $200,000 is a second degree felony and punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Messages left for Jared Ducote, who lives in San Angelo, were unanswered as of Friday afternoon.
Hudson said he did not wish to comment on the case.

I know if it made the paper it should have some actual facts behind it. But, I know first hand that the law enforcement in San Angelo arrest innocent people. I don't know either way on this case.

Wow, my mouth dropped 10ft. to the floor when I read this article. I went to school with Jared in high school and I never would suspect this from him. He did lie alot when I knew him so I can hear him trying to somehow talk himself out of this one. I feel bad for his parents, they are nice folks. Too bad...its awful to see past friends in the paper like this.
