BREAKING NEWS: TLC recommended for charter; final vote set for Friday
AUSTIN - San Angelo's TLC Academy was recommended today to become a new charter school by the state's Committee of School Initiative.
The committee voted 3-2 to recommend giving TLC a charter. The board picked eight schools to recommend to the full State Board of Education for final approval. On Friday, the state board will decide whether the recommended schools will receive charters.
In all, 16 groups were looking for charters.
During the meeting, supporters of TLC spoke to the board asking it to give students in San Angelo a choice for smaller schools. Several read letters from TLC parents who did not attend the meeting but said their children do not feel safe in the public school district.
The TLC group was the first of only two groups to speak in front of the board before the recommendations were named.
In all, seven people spoke in favor of TLC, including Pastor Walt Landers.
TLC has run a school since 1974.
"We know the needs of West Texas," Landers said. "We are there for support. Some parents can't afford private school, and some can't home-school."
