After three seasons as the head football coach at Central High, Steve Heryford has been reassigned.

The announcement came this morning, six days after Heryford's Bobcats finished an 0-10 season, just the third winless campaign in the program's history.

Heryford, a Midland native and graduate of Greenwood High School, was hired in spring 2006 to replace Bob Bellard.

He had previously been a head coach at Del Rio and Tahoka and had really made a name for himself with Central fans and players as defensive coordinator on the Bobcats 2003 state quarterfinalist team.

His first season as head coach of the Bobcats in 2006, he went 6-6 and won a first-round playoff game.

The next year, he was 5-6 and lost in the first round. Central finished last year with three straight losses, and 10 more this season had the Bobcats in the midst of the second-longest losing streak in program history.

Heryford's overall record at Central was 11-22.

This season, the Bobcats never got going after blowout losses to open the season against a pair of state-ranked teams, Copperas Cove and Odessa Permian. They were also beset by injuries, which forced them into playing four kids at quarterback.

This was the first season since 2002 that Central had not made the playoffs, although this was the first season the Bobcats were playing in a 10-team District 2-5A after a decade in a six-team district.

"I'm going to serve here or serve somewhere else," Heryford had said Friday after the season ending loss. "I have faith in God that that's going to be taken care of. I try not to spend too much time thinking about it. I'm going to do what's best for these young men as long as that's my job. When that's not my job, I'll go do it somewhere else."

The district said Heryford will, for the present time serve as an administrative intern with SAISD.

If you (superintendent) fired him, then let him go and quit spending money on the postition until you get another headcoach. By the way, did you take a hard look at injuries and talent he had this year. If the kids are not that experienced, then he did not have anything to work with. But, I know that makes no difference in West Texas High School Football. Either you win or the head coach goes, no matter what experence the kids have that he has to work with.

Every single person who I heard discuss the statistics of the team this year blamed the losses on the coaching. Despite all the issues with the athletes, it is the coach's job to lead the team to winning games. If the inexperienced players had been well coached, they could have won at least one game in the season. So I agree that coaching was a huge issue.

This is about kid's games - isn't there anything important to report on or worry about?

The economy? SAISD taxes? City infrastructure?

Get seroius - in the real scheme of things, high school football isn't very important.

Oh, I forgot - West Texas............

The former coach and his family are going to have to find a new job, and a new place to live. I would say that is pretty important! If it wasn't that big of a deal, he wouldn't have lost his job!

What an ignorant statement!

Its very important to the kids Coach Heryford has influenced, the followers of Central athletics, the other coaches who may or may not have a job and those who would like to see a successful football program at Central. The impact and pride a winning football program has on its players, fans and community is very important.

Look at Permian and the tradition there. They are on the right track from 7-12 grade. The Midland schools are right behind them. Coach was getting the younger ones involved this year and last year in weight room ,etc..trying to build on the future which was good. We need more 7on7 teams that would get qb's and recivers good work.

My son has been in this program for 3 years. 7th ,8th & 9th grade I like Coach Heryford as a person, however, he is not up for the job as head football coach. I have watched the work outs with the football team and I must say I have girlfreinds who work out harder. They do not have a good weight program. I was considering moving just so my son could get better coaching. Hopefully this will be a step in getting back to a winning tradition. I am sorry for the family losing a job, but if you know anything about coaching, that is part of the deal from the beginning. I hope them all the best wherever they go.

"If you (superintendent) fired him, then let him go and quit spending money on the postition until you get another headcoach."

The man has a contract for the rest of this school year.

From what I see and hear, Coach Heryford is a great guy, and he will not have a problem finding a supportive school district where he will have a winning record. He has a very strong moral character, and footbal players can learn a lot about life from good men like Coach Heryford.

"I was considering moving just so my son could get better coaching."

Does this mean you consider his education secondary? What is really important to you?

Posted by bb14 on November 13, 2008 at 6:57 p.m.

You should move your kid to Lakeview and see how they do next year. They are losing alot of players.

Posted by oldlady on November 13, 2008 at 8:02 p.m.

so the coach lost his job, get over it. it took three years for the district to get rid of tim reid at lake view and look at them now. First year head coach Sterlin Gilbert is taking his team to the playoffs after a four year absence of playoff games. Back up the Chiefs and give them your support, then worry about finding another coach. The SAISD will find another coach, it's their job.

GO CHIEFS!!! WIN BI-DISTRICT AND BRING SAN ANGELO A GOLDEN FOOTBALL

What is the average teacher's salary in SAISD? I'll guess it's a lot less than the $89,000+ the football coach makes (per SAST in a follow-up article to this one). Maybe it's because I'm not a native Texan, but the idea that a losing coach makes more money than the teachers is incredible to me.
According to this site, http://teacherportal.com/district/tex... , the average teachers salary in San Angelo is just under 42,000 a year-that's with seniority, to boot.

Absolutely not. Education is my number one priority. However, we should be able to have both. Don't you agree?

OK, here are the salary schedules for SAISD and for Odessa, with whom San Angelo competes for teachers. I guess your site must be saying that the SAISD teachers on average have more than 10 years experience, because you don't get close to 42,000 until after that mark. It is pretty obvious SAISD has a hard time competing for teachers with the disparity shown below. Do you still think SAISD teachers are overpaid? (PS - this is WITH recent increases in the SAISD salary scale, so obviously Bonds, the board, and McCutchen are TRYING to correct the inequity, plus improving the stipend schedule for coaches.)
Whatever Heryford's salary is, it isn't close to these guys, and this was 2005 I believe:

Midland Lee Randy Quisenberry $98,572

scottac64-
Sorry if I wasn't clear in my post-that site had the average-so those with 0 years experience, and those with 20+ years. I figured the starting salary was around 35,000 (I was low). I always thought teachers were underpaid, now I know they are. the two coaches Yenzer and Quisenberry-how long have they been at the schools in Midland/Odessa? Heryford was making just under 90,000 and he's only been here since 2006.

Don't overlook hiring a minority head coach. Central has passed over quality head coaches for years now. Give everyone a chance. BOOMER SOONERS

Posted by scottac64 on November 17, 2008 at 2:58 p.m.

in response to cissyboo

The years are your years as an educator, not at your current school. Since Quisenberry is going to be the next Central coach (or so the rumor says) I assume the $90,000 Heryford was making will look small compared to what he will get...

in response to oldlady

Coach Reid took the Lake View job when no one else would after Coach McQueen left to go to perennial loser Smithville just to get out of here. And you say it took three years to get RID of him? You want to judge Coach Gilbert, see what he does in his 4th year. Those will be HIS KIDS, not kids who spent three years learning from another HC.

This was a very painful season for CHS football. I attended the first several games this year and couldn’t understand the play calling and the placement of personal. I try not to be critical of someone and their job, but this was bad. I think SAISD should take a look to hire a coach with a fresh new prospective ex. Lakeview, its good to see young people leading young people in our community. Many people on this comment page made a good point is that you need a consistent program from junior high to high school, and teach one philosophy of football instead of a whole new program every time we get a new coach.
