Human remains found by hunters near Twin Buttes

Human skeletal remains were found Thursday morning by two deer hunters at Twin Buttes Reservoir, said Tom Green County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Bill Fiveash.

The hunters, from Goodfellow Air Force Base, found the bones about 7:30 a.m. on the south shore of the north pool, Fiveash said. He did not know the hunters' names.

Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Magee went to the scene, where he identified what looked like a human skull, Fiveash said. The area, overgrown with small trees and shrubs, was a quarter-mile off the main road near the turn-off from the equalization channel. A guard was posted to keep people away.

Texas Rangers were called in to investigate, he said. A thorough search of the area will take a few days, and whatever is found will be taken to a medical examiner.

The remains will be sent to a forensic lab, Fiveash said, with information available probably no sooner than Tuesday or Wednesday.

This is really scary I live not to far and have children that go camping out there. The cops need to find out how long the remains have been there, than look at missing persons from that time. They look at dental records and match the teeth.

My cousin went missing in April 1991. She was 21 at the time. Rumor has it that she was murdered, no remains have ever been found.

Posted by txkboy on November 6, 2008 at 4:23 p.m.

I hope the authorities find this persons home so they can rest in peace.

Posted by Itellyouwhat on November 6, 2008 at 4:25 p.m.

You watch to much CSI. They know how to do their jobs.

Posted by nikkibmartinez on November 6, 2008 at 5:06 p.m.

my neice, Monica Joy Martinez, was murderd back in the early '90s, by two scumbags! They cowardly buried her out there in the middle of the reservoir and a massive search was done and her body was never found. I'm really hopeing it is Her remains and we can finally lay Her to rest and our family can be at peace!

I hope that some scumbag is losing sleep right now over this discovery.

Posted by lovetexas on November 6, 2008 at 5:37 p.m.

San Angelo in not without it's problems, but something tells me the police can do thier job just fine and it could not hurt at all that the Texas Rangers were called in on it also.

I only hope we all will get to know who this person is and that their killer is found.

center_prise: Did you call TGC SO and tell them what needs to be done? They may not have known.

If I remember right that boyfriend/girlfriend was found with their feet missing. They were in some cult.

Upon talking about this discovery with my mother last night she too thought that the young couple had been found. I do not seem to remember that. Does anyone else know? Were they indeed found? I remember the unsolved mysteries segment and all of the reporting done on the case but do not remember if their remains were located. Anyone know for sure?

Posted by classof76 on November 7, 2008 at 8:34 a.m.

From the episode guide of Unsolved Mysteries television show:

"Unexplained Death: Shane Stewart and Sally McNeely were two teens who grew up in San Angelo, Texas. Stewart and McNeely apparently had become involved in a satanic cult which may have had something to do with their mysterious 1988 murder. "

Posted by Shaynebo on November 7, 2008 at 8:39 a.m.

Unfortunately as many rumors there are about Twin Butts, I hope this is the answer to one of those stories. Not sure about the couple, but it has been said that many people have gone missing out there. And with the way that lake fills and receeded there is no telling. As for indentification, that is going to be difficult if they only found a small amount of remains.

Posted by webcop2 on November 7, 2008 at 8:42 a.m.

Shane and Sally were found shot execution style not long after the 4th of July. They were killed by the cult they were trying to leave. My best friend is Shanes cousin and is still interested in finding the people who are responsible for their death, I say people as one killed them but the others could have stopped it from happening. We spent many a night searching the lake areas to try to find the locations that the cult worshipped at and destroyed many an alter but never saw the members.

Posted by miacara on November 7, 2008 at 9:15 a.m.

Actually her name was McNelly but that's neither here nor there.
There are many people that know who killed them but they are too scared to say anything.
Lets just hope whoever they found now has a family that will get some closure.

Does anyone know anything in regards to the cults that were or still are out there? I had heard mention years ago not to go out there at night, obviously, but you could see headlights or lights off in the distance. Anyone know of such things?

Sorry if I mispelled her name. I copied it from the Unsolved Mysteries epsisode guide. Maybe this discovery will prompt someone to come forward and help solve thier case. along with finding out who they just found

Posted by miacara on November 7, 2008 at 9:34 a.m.

in response to classof76

Sorry classof76, that wasn't meant for you, I just noticed that her name was misspelled on all the sites I found about them.
As for someone coming forward, the last couple of people that dared paid dearly. The cops know, they just aren't going to do anything.

Their still around but as times have change so has their locations. we have heard of activities taking place still around the lakes and also in different houses around town. As someone stated the police know and no one is willing to go up against them.

Posted by Shaynebo on November 7, 2008 at 11:11 a.m.

in response to webcop2

I don't know if it is that no one wants to go against them, grant it I can see the whole freedom of religion card being thrown. I have always been told as a kid about it. Never really believed it, do now to an extent but still think that cults in San Angelo is kind of odd? I am sure they are everywhere...You would think with the whole thing down in Eldorado that someone or some form of government could outlaw or ban cults. Soemthing along that line. I think identifying whatever remains where found is going to be very difficult.

Posted by Texan_in_WV on November 7, 2008 at 11:23 a.m.

Webcop2 - you know just as well as I do that too many people are scared of those who were involved and the price they would pay if they talked - as you said, some did talk and paid dearly.

You probably also are aware that even back then, the police were missing one critical piece of evidence. While the "cult" thing was involved - it was the drug angle too. Sally simply knew too much and Shane was in the cross-hairs.

I truly feel sorry for Sally and Shane's families - particularly with this discovery. I am sure that this will dredge up so many things for them.

I also feel profoundly for the family of the deceased recently found.

Posted by txkboy on November 7, 2008 at 12:07 p.m.

Whomever the scumbag is that did it, better be looking over his shoulder for the Rangers!!

Posted by adcruzzer on November 7, 2008 at 12:16 p.m.

Satanic cults have been in San Angelo for years--how far back I'm not sure. I do know that when my sister was in high school in the 70's they were partying at the lake and came across a group of them around a fire/in black robes/chanting,etc...I graduated in 80's and crossed paths with one guy claimed to be a warlock--he subsequently hung himself in county jail. Drugs are definately a gateway tool into the occult and we all know how prevalant drugs are in San Angelo(everywhere) now don't we. Sally and her boyfriend even went to local baptist church for help....I can only hope to think that she gave her life to Jesus Christ before she was murdered. Praise God. They hide in the dark, but one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

I think it was Twin Buttes

Posted by classof76 on November 7, 2008 at 1:31 p.m.

That certainly could be a possibilty

Posted by rbm8716 on November 7, 2008 at 4:09 p.m.

They found them at O.C. Fisher, bfore it was a state park. Back then you could drive anywhere you wanted around that lake. We used to live in Highland Range, and there used to be a lot of traffic in and out of that area all hours of the night!

The missing man from Robert Lee (about a year ago) was Jon Shadden, but he was last seen at Spence, not Twin Buttes. The website is: jonshaddenmissing.com

Posted by coolkatt on November 13, 2008 at 4:39 p.m.

This is sad, and If it is the girl missing from 1991, I hope they had suspects back then, and I hope they are still around to pay for what they have done. Does anyone know what actually happened to the girl?

I remeber Monica, she would come to our house, she was friends with my sis. She was a very nice and pretty girl. It is sad that her life was cut short. I pray that her family, if it is her remains, can finally get some peace. I think the two men who killed her are in prison, but I think it is for drugs not the murder. I'm not to sure.
